When Death Knocks
When my final hour is drawing near,
Won’t you stay beside me for a while?
Let these tired, frozen fingers find your hand,
And touch your face before they rest awhile.
And in that final breath I breathe,
Let it carry something sweet and true—
The gentle fragrance of your presence,
So my last breath still carries you.
When death comes knocking at my door,
Won’t you stay beside me just a little more?
Let me close my eyes with your face in view,
Let my final heartbeat remember you.
And when this road comes to its end,
Let love be the last thing I hold on to.
When death comes knocking at my door,
Won’t you stay beside me
just a little more?
In these eyes that will not open again,
Let your face be the last thing that I see.
And in these ears that soon will hear no sound,
Let your voice remain a memory.
When my mind is burning with memories,
Let your green and gentle memories rain,
Like a quiet summer falling through the leaves,
Washing every sorrow from my pain.
And the wound your sweetest kiss once left
Let your name like a prayer make whole.
My love, I’ll remember every road
That I walked just to find your soul.
And when I think of all those roads,
Let my weary feet grow still and calm.
For every step that led me back to you
Was worth a lifetime
in my arms.
When death comes knocking at my door,
Won’t you stay beside me just a little more?
Let me close my eyes with your face in view,
Let my final heartbeat remember you.
And when this road comes to its end,
Let love be the last thing I hold on to.
When death comes knocking at my door,
Won’t you stay beside me
just a little more?
And when this body returns to the earth,
Let the soil cover me softly and slow.
If love can bring a life back from the ground,
Let me rise as a little blade of green grass and grow.
And if the morning finds me there,
Let the wind carry my love to you.
When death comes knocking at my door,
Won’t you stay beside me
just a little more?
Just a little more...
Stay beside me...
Just a little more.
