Coffee pot was bubbling
before the dawn
Dad's boots were tracking dried red clay
along the lawn
Mom hummed a kitchen tune
to keep the peace
Wiping flour from her apron
on the crease
They made a palace out of two-by-fours
I never saw the worry in their hands
They carried everything
Just so we could stand
Mom gave the grace,
Dad gave the spine
Turning water into bread
every single time
Weathered coats and worn-out shoes
Giving me the world they never got to choose
(oh mom and dad)
Dad taught me how to fix
a leaky pipe
Said take your time until the cut is right
Mom had a way of reading
every glance
Always cheering when I took a fragile chance
Now looking back I see the price they paid
Mom gave the grace,
Dad gave the spine
Turning water into bread
every single time
Weathered coats and worn-out shoes
Giving me the world they never got to choose
(yeah they gave it all)
Now silver strands are showing in their
hair I see the quiet love that put them there
Still standing on the shoulders that they gave (thank you)
