It was midnight...
Just me, a cup of coffee,
And the devil sitting across the table.
He asked me what I wanted.
I smiled...
And gave him a lump of sugar.
I poured two cups of bitter black,
The devil sat and leaned right back.
He wore a smile,
he wore a lie,
With ancient darkness in his eyes.
He said, "What brings you here tonight?
A little soul? A little light?"
I stirred my coffee,
watched him grin, And dropped a sugar cube within.
I said, "I've never given you
A thing for free,
not once, it's true.
Since the first day you came to be,
You've always bargained endlessly.
But here's a gift,
no debt, no price,
No hidden game, no sacrifice." He held that little cube of white,
Like he'd never seen such light.
One lump of sugar for the devil,
One small kindness in the night.
I gave him sweetness without asking,
He gave me back the light.
No golden deal, no blood,
no treasure, No bargain written in the sand.
I gave him something without measure,
And light came shining through his hands.
He looked at me and said so low,
"There's something you don't seem to know.
I've ruled the dark since time began,
I've bought the hearts of every man.
But no one ever gave me grace,
Or looked beyond my wicked face.
You gave me something I can't buy,
A taste of heaven passing by."
And then I saw...
Perhaps the devil wasn't hungry for my soul.
Perhaps he only wanted something
That no one had ever given him.
A gift
without a price.
He raised his cup,
the night was shook,
The stars appeared inside his look.
He said, "Amir Hossein,
now you see, The light you seek was always free.
You thought that
I had stolen day,
But you had locked your light away.
One act of kindness broke the spell,
And brought you heaven out of hell." One lump of sugar for
the devil, One small kindness in the night!
I gave him sweetness without asking,
He gave me back the light!
No golden deal, no blood,
no treasure, No chains to bind me to his hand!
I gave a gift beyond all measure,
And found the light I couldn't understand!
I came for coffee...
He came for my soul...
But I gave him a little sweetness.
And he gave me the light.
Funny thing about the devil...
He knew the price of everything...
But never knew the value of a gift.
