Flicker of Us

You were fixing up your hair whenever I walked by,

I'd catch you looking over,

then we'd both look away shy.

We'd laugh about the stupidest things,

And I still remember the feeling it brings.

Those little conversations that went on for hours,

The silly little jokes and the late-night showers Of messages and laughter

lighting up my screen,

For a little while,

it felt like something real to me.

And I used to smile when your name came up,

Read old messages just because.

I thought maybe there was something there,

Something more than just a passing stare.

Then you ignored me all day,

Had me checking my phone,

And when that message finally came,

I knew I was on my own.

Oh, paragraph boy, what a way to say goodbye,

All those little memories,

now I'm wondering why.

Said you don't want a relationship,

and honestly, that's fine,

But I wish I'd known before I started changing my mind.

And I won't pretend that it didn't hurt,

Or that I didn't wish that things had worked.

You can keep the memories,

I'll keep what I've learned,

Some things feel like forever,

but they're only your turn.

Remember all the times that you made me laugh?

The little things I thought we'd look back on and have.

The way I'd get excited when I'd see you around,

And how one little message could turn my day around.

And I know you weren't mean,

you were honest and kind,

I guess we just weren't seeing things the same way in our

minds. My friend gave you advice,

and things changed overnight,

I just didn't think goodbye would come that night.

And I still think about the good days,

The stupid jokes and the little things you'd say.

I wouldn't erase them,

even if I could,

Because for a little while,

it really felt good.

Oh, paragraph boy, what a way to say goodbye,

All those little memories,

now I'm wondering why.

Said you don't want a relationship,

and honestly, that's fine,

But I wish I'd known before I started changing my mind.

And I won't pretend that it didn't hurt,

Or that I didn't wish that things had worked.

You can keep the memories,

I'll keep what I've learned,

Some things feel like forever,

but they're only your turn.

Laced up my shoes,

let the streetlights blur,

Ran through the night,

still thinking of the words.

Had a little cry,

then I let it go,

Sometimes moving on is the only way you know.

And maybe you were just a chapter,

Not the whole story after all.

I'm glad we had the moments,

Even if we watched them fall.

Oh, paragraph boy, yeah,

I read every line,

And maybe for a moment,

I thought you'd be mine.

You don't want a relationship?

Baby, that's okay, I've got so much more waiting for me anyway.

And I'll keep the laughs,

the memories too, The little things that reminded me of you.

I cried a little bit,

but look at me now,

I'm finding my feet,

and I'm figuring it out.

You were a good memory,

Just not my happy ending.

You sent a paragraph…

I went for a run.

And life's still pretty good,

Even when things don't become something.
