I remember TV playing after school
Mom in the kitchen making supper like she’d do
Back then those days just seemed to roll along I never knew
someday I’d miss them when they’re gone That school bus would drop
me off down the road
And I’d head for the packing house before I went home
Apples rolling by, boxes stacked against the wall
I didn’t know I was making memories at all
Funny how the days you hardly noticed then
Are the ones you’d give anything to live again
I’m back in the house I grew up in
Same old walls, but a different man
Funny how you spend your whole life leaving
Just to wind up where it all began Every room takes me
somewhere I’ve been To a life I never knew I’d miss back
then I thought coming back meant going back again But I found
myself
In the house I grew up in
I drove that tractor while they loaded up the crates
Watched the cider running fresh out of the press We made apple
baskets, stacked ’em by the wall
Then hauled those apples to the local markets every fall
I got old enough to work instead of watch
Turning wrenches on the tractors in the shop And when the work
was done I’d fire that three-wheeler up And ride
every row and back road on that farm
I couldn’t wait
to grow up and find my way
Now I look back
and miss those simpler days
I’m back in the house I grew up in
Same old walls, but a different man
Funny how you spend your whole life leaving
Just to wind up where it all began Every room takes me
somewhere I’ve been To a life I never knew I’d miss back
then I thought coming back meant going back again But I found
myself
In the house I grew up in
The bills kept coming faster than we could catch up We worked
that land, but it still wasn’t enough
A hundred thirty acres changed hands in the end But ten acres
and this old house stayed with us The orchards and the vineyard
rows went with the land A whole piece of our history changed
hands We couldn’t keep it all,
no matter how we tried But the house I grew up in
stayed by our side
Dad was always the one who knew what to do If something
broke, somehow he’d see us through I watched those hands keep everything
running right
Never thinking there would come another side of life Now I’m the
one doing the heavier things Taking care of what another
season brings And sometimes I look at him and understand The one
who left here came back a different man
I used to think home was a place you left behind Somewhere
in the rearview while you chased another life But after all the
places and the years between I finally know what this old place
means We couldn’t keep every acre that we knew But the heart
of it was something we held onto Ten acres,
one old house, and everything within Waiting all these years For me
to come back again
I’m back in the house I grew up in
Same old walls, but a different man A hundred thirty acres may
be gone But this old house is where I still belong
It’s Mom in the kitchen,
it’s Dad, it’s the farm
Apple crates and cider and grease on my arms It’s tractor tires
turning and that three-wheeler running wild It’s everything that shaped me Into
who I am today Yeah,
after all these years I’m home again
Back in the house I grew up in
I couldn’t wait to leave it then
Funny how good it feels To be home again
