The Pledge Within

a truth we're scared to see…
A life is lost,
a light goes out,
every ten to eleven minutes,
globally.
Can we just watch the ticking clock?
Can we just turn our heads?
When the danger isn't 'out there,'
it's in our homes,
it's in our beds.
The enemy isn't faceless,
it's the anger we let grow
It's the choice to use our words and hands to hurt,
to dominate, to control.
So I take the pledge,
I make a stand,
with my own two hands!
I will be nonviolent,
I will respect my body,
and I'll protect the land!
It's not a slogan,
it's a vow, a line drawn in the sand!
I AM NVP! And you can be too!
It begins with me,
and it begins with you!

For every four women
who don't see the morning light
For every girl whose future is stolen
in the dead of night
This isn't fate, it's a failure,
a cycle we can break With every single choice we make,
for goodness' sake! It's in the way we raise our sons,
the way we teach respect It's in the way we see a
victim and choose to not neglect.
The power isn't in a law,
a building, or a throne It's in the heart,
it's in the home,
it's in the seed we've sown.
