There’s a box up in the closet
Full of things I used to know,
Little shoes and faded ribbons,
Pictures from so long ago.
There’s a drawing from kindergarten,
With my name in crooked lines,
Funny how the smallest pieces
Can bring back the biggest times.
I remember kitchen dancing,
Socks sliding on the floor,
Asking just a hundred questions,
Then running out the door.
I thought that I’d be grown-up By the time I turned thirteen,
But nobody told me growing up
Would happen in between.
A thousand little moments,
A million little days,
The laughter in the hallway,
The memories that stayed.
From the first time I said “Mama”
To the person I am now,
I never saw the years go by,
But I can see them somehow.
A thousand little moments,
Like stars that filled my sky,
I was busy being little
While my childhood hurried by.
There were birthdays with the candles,
There were summers without plans,
There were nights I feared the thunder
And reached for someone's hand.
Now the clothes I wore are smaller
Than the memories in my head,
And I wish I could revisit
Every ordinary day instead.
If I could stop the clock a minute,
I wouldn't change a thing,
I'd just listen to the voices
And the happiness they bring.
A thousand little moments,
A million little days,
The laughter in the hallway,
The memories that stayed.
From the first time I said “Mama”
To the person I am now,
I never saw the years go by,
But I can see them somehow.
A thousand little moments,
Like stars that filled my sky,
I was busy being little
While my childhood hurried by.
Someday I'll find these pictures
When I'm older than today,
And wonder how the little girl I was could change this way.
I'll have new dreams to chase then,
New places I will go,
But she'll be somewhere inside me,
In the things I used to know.
A thousand little moments,
Still living deep inside,
The first steps and the scraped knees,
The tears I tried to hide.
And although I can't go backwards,
There's one thing I know is true:
Every little piece of childhood
Helped make me who I grew into.
A thousand little moments,
A story still unfolding,
I'm not that little girl anymore,
But I'm not done becoming.
So here's to all the little things That didn't seem like much,
The days I didn't know I'd miss,
The hands that held me up.
I didn't grow in one big moment,
It happened day by day…
A thousand little moments Made me who I am today.
(who
I am today)
