Eight in the morning,
coffee going cold Staring at a phone that ain’t ringing no more
From Forest Ranch down to Wheatland town There’s a redheaded girl I
can’t track down
Sent her my love,
sent her my prayers But silence is the hardest thing a heart
can bear
I know she’s fighting demons I can’t see And I’m scared of
what that silence means to me
So I picked
up the phone,
told ’em where she stays
Said, “Officer, please,
can you check on her today?”
Two calls to Wheatland,
one worried heart Seventy miles might as well be Mars I ain’t
trying to control her,
ain’t trying to fight I just need to know that she’s alright
She can cuss my name,
she can tell me we’re through But I’d rather hear her angry
than not hear her at all
Two calls to Wheatland,
and I’m praying tonight
Lord, just let that redhead be alright
Called ‘em back, said,
“Have you found her yet?” They said they’d check,
but I ain’t heard nothing back
Told ‘em she’s got healing she needs to find
And a road to recovery waiting down the line
There’s a place in Corning where she might begin To build herself
a life and learn to breathe again
But this morning ain’t about tomorrow’s plans It’s about knowing she’s safe
wherever she stands
Two calls to Wheatland,
one worried heart Seventy miles might as well be Mars I ain’t
trying to control her,
ain’t trying to fight I just need to know that she’s alright
She can cuss my name,
she can tell me we’re through But I’d rather hear her angry
than not hear her at all
Two calls to Wheatland,
and I’m praying tonight
Lord, just let that redhead be alright
“Lea,
I don’t need you to explain a thing.
I don’t need an apology.
I don’t even need you to call me back.
I just need to know you’re safe.
That’s all, sweetheart.
That’s all.”
Two calls to Wheatland,
these hands still shake Some nights love means giving somebody space And
sometimes love means asking someone to check When the silence gets too
heavy to forget
I can’t walk her road,
can’t make her heal Can’t change the pain that only she can
feel But wherever this morning takes our lives
God, please keep my redhead safe tonight
Coffee’s cold, the sun’s climbing high Still got her picture on my
mind Two calls to Wheatland,
a prayer sent through
Lea, somewhere out there,
I’m thinking of you.
