Okay, confession time.
You know that whole…
swagger thing? (hahaha) I was kidding.
Like, REALLY kidding.
And then you guys made it my entire career.
I was the girl at the back of the room With the
wrong kind of shoes and a borrowed perfume Couldn’t walk in a
straight line, couldn’t play it cool So I made being awkward look
like a rule! Put on sunglasses inside the mall
Strutted like I owned the place,
walked into a wall My best friend laughed till she couldn’t breathe
Said, “Girl, that’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen!”
So I turned it up,
played the part Made a little joke with a great big heart
Never thought that anyone would see
Anything special in me!
I used to fake it for the camera,
Now the camera follows me,
Guess the joke got kinda famous,
And forgot to tell me!
I was dancing like nobody cared With a crooked smile and ridiculous
hair Now the whole world’s singing my melody And I still can’t
believe it’s me!
Oh-oh-oh, what a beautiful mess!
I never knew what would happen next
Guess the joke got kinda famous
And the punchline’s me!
First little show, barely filled the floor My mama sold tickets standing
by the door
Grandma in the front with a homemade sign Spelled my stage name
wrong, but I didn’t mind!
Then a video hit and the numbers flew
People started doing all the things I’d do The silly little dance
and the sideways grin Suddenly the whole world wanted in!
I was just pretending I belonged
Till a thousand strangers sang along Somewhere in the middle of that
night
The joke started feeling right!
Okay, rewind, backtrack, take it to the beginning Had a bedroom mirror
and a talent for pretending Cheap little speakers,
hairbrush microphone Practicing my superstar face when nobody was home!
Walked like a queen,
tripped like a clown Told everybody I was running this town Had
a fake little strut and a made-up pose With a price-tag sticker
hanging off my clothes!
Then boom! One clip,
two million views Three record labels,
four interviews Five different people trying to tell me what to wear
Six months later, got my face everywhere!
But the funniest part?
Let me tell you the truth I was never that cool,
not even in my youth I just learned that the best kind
of confidence is free When you laugh at yourself and let be!
And somehow…
You all laughed with me.
Not at me.
Sometimes I miss that little room
Before the crowds and dressing rooms
When all I had was one big dream
And no idea what it would mean
But every time I hear you sing
I think about that awkward kid Who thought she had
to play pretend To be somebody worth believing in… Turns out she
already was.
I used to fake it for the camera,
Now the camera follows me,
Guess the joke got kinda famous,
And forgot to tell me!
I was dancing like nobody cared With a crooked smile and ridiculous
hair Now the
whole world’s singing my melody And I finally believe it’s me!
Oh-oh-oh, what a beautiful mess!
I wouldn’t change what happened next Guess the
joke got kinda famous And the punchline’s me!
So, um…
Thanks for getting the joke.
(hahaha) Even when I didn’t.
Love you guys.
