I was lost and hopeless
At a young age
For years I lived a life of drugs
Abusive relationships Domestic violence I blamed myself
For so much of it
But the truth is...
I was surviving abuse
Trauma bonding
Held me captive
My two young children
And me
Homeless
Living in a tent
That was my life
Before I finally found
A safe shelter When I called Child Protective Services On myself
And even they couldn't help I knew...
I knew I had to act fast
In June 2006
A women's shelter took us in With their help
I began to change My daughters' lives And my own
If I can do this YOU can too
After feeling hopeless Homeless Helpless There's a way through
While I was there
I met VL
At a "Day of Beauty" event
She and her team
Did our hair and makeup
Gifted us clothes and accessories Made us feel brand new
For the first time In so long
I felt like a woman
Not just a survivor
After that Day of Beauty I went to school
Got a good job
As a medical assistant
For the last 11 years Got married to a good man
Had a son
Now we got our own home
I never lost touch with VL
Volunteered at BFF America events
Represented LIVE on K.
U. S. I. News
Now I serve on the executive board I'm honored
To help women like me Find pieces of themselves They thought they
had lost And in 2006
I made a vow
That I still carry with me now "I pledge to be nonviolent,
Respect my body,
And protect the earth."
