Walked into work about a quarter past eight My shadow was sitting
in my parking space
Wearing my tie with a confident grin Said,
"Close the door, we need to talk when you come in"
I said, "You've been following me for years" He said,
"That's called dedication, my dear" Boss shook his hand,
gave him keys to the floor Then asked me why I wasn't
smiling anymore
He never lifted anything
Never stayed a minute late
But apparently he's management
And I'm supposed to celebrate
My shadow got promoted
And I'm standing in the shade
He got the corner office
I got another bill to pay
He took the credit for my footsteps
Got a raise for every move I made
My shadow got promoted
And I'm standing in the shade
He sent an email saying,
"Teamwork makes the dream" Then scheduled me a meeting with a photocopy
machine The coffee pot resigned,
the stapler took a leave And the clock filed a complaint because
I wouldn't let it breathe He said,
"You need a better attitude,
my friend" I said,
"You're literally attached to my damn legs" He said,
"That's the kind of thinking holding people back" Then put my whole
career inside a paper sack
Everybody wants the spotlight
Everybody wants the crown
Funny how the ones who follow Get to tell you to sit
down
My shadow got promoted
And I'm standing in the shade
He got the corner office
I got another bill to pay
He took the credit for my footsteps Got a raise for every
move I made
My shadow got promoted
And I'm standing in the shade
I spent my life beneath the ceiling
Trying hard to reach the sun
Never thought the thing behind me
Would be called the chosen one
Then I stepped outside at lunchtime
Watched him stretching down the street
And I finally started laughing When he disappeared beneath my feet
My shadow got promoted
And I'm standing in the shade
He got the corner office
I got another bill to pay
He took the credit for my footsteps Got a raise for every
move I made
My shadow got promoted
And I'm standing in the shade
Boss said, "Where's your supervisor?"
I said,
"Depends on the lighting."
