Carter’s Groove

Old man Carter by the river bend

Fixing up a tackle that'll never mend

Copper kettle boiling on the morning coal

Cigarette paper and a quiet soul He don't say much till the

sun dips down

Singing Carter,

where'd the seasons go?

Rolling down the valley

like an undertow

Keep your hands upon the cedar pine

Counting up the water,

running out of time (ooh-ooh)

Sawmill shut back in seventy-nine

Left his heavy boots along the county line

He keeps a faded portrait on the mantel shelf

Talking to the timber like he talks to himself

Just another winter on the red clay hill

Singing Carter, where'd the seasons go?

Rolling down the valley

like an undertow

Keep your hands upon the cedar pine

Counting up the water,

running out of time (running out of time)

Wood smoke drifting through the white oak leaves

Nothing stays as steady as the wind in the trees

Oh, Carter, where'd the seasons go?

Rolling down the valley

like an undertow

Keep your hands upon the cedar pine

Counting up the water,

running out of time

Running out of time (ah-ha)
