A young boy asked the master composer one day
How he captured the songs that take breath away
The old man smiled as he looked at the snow
And said listen close to the world down below (hmm)
When footsteps fade and the iron wheels cease
There are prayers in the cold,
there is quiet and peace
Even the freeze of a midwinter night
Is a resting pause waiting softly for light
For all of creation
has sung from its birth
A hymn through the branches and deep in the earth
We drown it in sirens,
in engines and haste
While holy small voices are scattered to waste (ooh-ooh)
So I turn down the chaos
and lay down my pen
To welcome that still,
ancient whisper again
I spend all my winters
just writing it down
Yet never come near
to that wonderful sound
For all of creation
has sung from its birth
A hymn through the branches and deep in the earth
Just quiet the noise and
be still where you stand
And hear heaven's music fill over the land
(hear it now)
Be still and hear it (mm-mm)
