Monday.
Five kids.
One ice cream stand.
One little question...
WE WANT SOME TOO!
Monday afternoon, the sun is high,
The oldest spots the ice cream sign.
"Hey Dad, can I have one,
please?"
Four more faces turn to me.
Five little cones, five happy grins,
Five sticky chins — everybody wins!
I think, "That's ice cream for the week!"
But Tuesday comes, and someone speaks.
One kid asked! And five got one!
So we're all done!
OH, COME ON!
FIVE AIN'T FIVE TIMES ONE!
That's where the trouble's begun!
One gets the idea,
the others join in,
Five scoops melting in the sun!
FIVE AIN'T FIVE TIMES ONE!
The counting's never done!
"Yesterday was HIS idea — Today it's MY turn,
Dad!" That's ice cream math!
HEY! HEY! That's ice cream math!
Tuesday morning, number two
Has something very clear to prove:
"Yes, I had ice cream yesterday,
But I didn't ask for it that day!" "You gave me one
because HE asked!
My own idea hasn't passed!" I scratch my head,
I count to five,
And watch the whole debate revive.
But you had ice!
That wasn't mine!
You ate it all!
BUT I DIDN'T ASK THIS TIME!
Nine and seven know the game,
Four can shout just the same.
And when the twins hear someone say "ice,"
Two little voices join the noise!
Nobody needs a master plan,
One little wish goes hand to hand.
By Thursday there's another plea,
By Friday they're surrounding me!
Let me get this straight.
Five children ate ice cream on Monday.
RIGHT!
So nobody needs another one?
WRONG! Because only one of you asked?
EXACTLY! And the others still get a turn?
OF COURSE!
That's not mathematics!
THAT'S FAMILY!
FIVE AIN'T FIVE TIMES ONE!
That's where the trouble's begun!
One gets the idea,
the others join in,
Five scoops melting in the sun!
FIVE AIN'T FIVE TIMES ONE!
The counting's never done!
I tried to buy some ice cream — Now I'm studying psychology!
That's ice cream math!
HEY! HEY! That's ice cream math!
Right.
Everybody's had one.
We're finished.
Dad?
Yeah?
Can we come back tomorrow?
WE WANT SOME TOO!
