  • Pond Breaks

    Pond Breaks

    Froggington

    Here, in a

pond made of planck dot j-s… sixty frames a

    second… a creature

    takes its very first step.

    It has seven boxes.

Six hinges. And absolutely no idea what it's doing.

Twenty-one senses wired to the brain,

Joint angle, tilt, is the foot down again,

A clock that ticks at one point five hertz,

    Seven hundred and twenty-six numbers,

    no nerves. No labels,

no teacher, no gradient to trace,

Just a score and a pond and a frog in its place.

"TypeScript or Python?" the boss asked,

    unsure.

"What do I lose?" Just the PPO,

    for sure!

    LEAP! FLIP! FACEPLANT! REPEAT!

Two hundred frogs and not one on its feet!

Mutate the numbers, keep the top five,

    EVOLUTION, BABY, NOW WHO SURVIVES?

    LEAP! FLIP! FACEPLANT! REPEAT!

    Sixteen milliseconds, ten seconds complete,

Hip, knee, ankle, motor on full,

WHAT WE MEASURED AIN'T WHAT WE MEANT,

    FOOL!

    Hand-coded hopper, "crouch then kick",

    Five point six metres,

now that's slick! Then it spun in the sky,

end angle one-six-eight, Landed on its head like a dropped dinner plate.

Forty newton-metres? That's way too strong,

    Cut 'em to thirty,

    the legs were wrong.

    Spun up the workers,

    eleven threads deep, "UNKNOWN FILE

    EXTENSION DOT T-S!" Weep!

    The workers, it seems,

    do not inherit the loader.

A small JavaScript bootstrap is required.

    tsx,

    register.

    Nature…

    finds a way.

    Gen zero, four point seven,

    a hop and a crash,

    Gen ten, eleven metres,

    a bigger splash, Gen twenty-nine,

fourteen point eight, Two point eight seconds then it's face on the

slate. Fell? One hundred per cent!

Every single one! The fittest frog's the one that dives before it's

    done. They didn't learn hopping,

    they learned to fall far,

Reward hack champions, every frog a star!

    Generation one…

    fell.

    Generation ten…

    fell.

    Generation twenty-nine…

    fell.

    Fitness is distance.

    Distance is dying.

    Dying…

    is winning.

    LEAP! FLIP! FACEPLANT! REPEAT!

Rewrite the rules so the landing's complete!

    Fall penalty minus ten,

    or scale by the time,

    Survive the whole ten seconds,

    then the distance is fine!

    LEAP! FLIP! FACEPLANT! REPEAT!

Checkpoint thirty saved, the swamp's not beat,

    FitnessRules written, the experiment's queued,

Rib rib ribbit… tomorrow they land it,

    dude!

    The experiment waits.

    Scale by survival…

    or punish the fall.

Two hundred frogs hold their breath.

They do not have lungs. (ribbit)
