I know that man
He looked a lot like me
Same crooked smile
Same stubborn way of leaving
He thought being strong
Meant never saying sorry
Thought every goodbye
Was somebody else’s fault
I ain’t ashamed
Of the man I used to be
He got me here
Even when he got it wrong
I wouldn’t shake his hand today
But I won’t erase his name
He carried me this far
And that’s worth something
He broke some good hearts
He trusted some bad people
He stayed too long
Then left before he should’ve
He thought the whole world
Was waiting on his answer
Didn’t know how much
He still had left to learn
I ain’t ashamed
Of the man I used to be
He got me here
Even when he got it wrong
I wouldn’t shake his hand today
But I won’t erase his name
He carried me this far
And that’s worth something
If I meet him someday
I’ll probably tell him:
“You should’ve listened more.”
(ahhhh) Then I’d buy him a drink.
