Below the Crack

I remember the second that the ground disappeared Had a whole world

ahead, then it wasn't there One hand reaching for a railing made

of air One last thought: I ain't ready,

this ain't fair Then the silence hit harder than the landing did

Couldn't find the man I was beneath the wreckage Everybody saw the

damage, counted what I'd lost

Nobody heard the heartbeat underneath the dust

I survived the fall

Heard the whole sky crack

Hit the bottom of the world Found a heartbeat looking back

I survived the fall

Got the scars to prove

Didn't land the way I wanted But I'm standing here with you

First day back, couldn't recognize my face Every little movement felt a

mile away

Had to learn the morning,

had to learn the stairs Had to make a little future out

of what was there Some days I was angry,

some days I was numb Some days all I managed was to

see another sun But a step is still a step when the

road is steep And a spark is still a fire if you

find a way to keep it

I don't call the wreckage some beautiful design Wouldn't wish that kind

of darkness on another life But I found a little strength in

the things I had to do Built a road from broken pieces,

walked until it grew Now the wind is in my face and

the ground is underneath I can hear that six-note rhythm moving through

the street Didn't come back perfect,

didn't come back clean Came back breathing with a future I can

see
