I woke up with the lights still on,
Another night already gone.
There’s something moving down the hall,
I hear the footsteps,
then they stop. I hear a voice beneath my own,
It talks to me when I’m alone.
It knows the things I never say,
It knows the person I’ve become today.
I tried to drown it in the noise,
I tried to bury every voice.
But every time I close my eyes,
He’s standing there right by my side.
Maybe I’m the one who let him in,
Maybe he’s been underneath my skin.
Maybe every time I chose the lie,
I gave another piece of me to him tonight.
I made a deal with my shadow just to sleep at night…
The Devil and I.
I keep telling everybody
I’m alright… The Devil and I.
He knows every secret that I keep inside… The Devil and I.
I don’t know who’s leading when I close my eyes… The Devil
and I.
He never asked me for my soul,
He only asked me for control.
A little more with every night,
A little less of me survives.
He says, “You know I understand,”
Then reaches out and takes my hand.
He tells me I don’t have to run,
Like he was there before anyone.
But every promise has a price,
And every kindness hides a knife.
I know exactly what he wants,
Still somehow I keep playing along.
If I disappeared, would anybody know?
If I stopped the fight,
would he finally let me go?
I looked into the mirror,
And I watched him start to smile.
He didn’t say a single word…
He just looked exactly like I—
I said, “Get out of my head.”
He said, “You put me there.”
I said, “You’re not real.”
He said, “Then why am I still here?”
I took one step back,
He took one step too.
I stared into his eyes…
And he looked just like— Maybe I
made a deal with my shadow just to sleep at night… The
Devil and I. Maybe every word I’ve ever said was another lie…
The Devil and I.
Maybe he’s been waiting for me on the other side… The Devil
and
I. Maybe when I finally face him,
I’ll see my own eyes… The Devil and I.
I don’t need to run anymore,
I don’t need to hide.
I finally know who’s been standing
By my side…
All this time…
The Devil and I.
