  • Three Chairs By The Water

    Three Chairs By The Water

    Mason Whitehead|1

We left the house before the daylight,

Old truck humming down the road.

Two boys sleeping in the backseat,

    Fishing poles beside their coats.

Dad had coffee in the cupholder,

    A cooler full of ice,

And a whole day waiting on us Underneath that morning sky.

    Three chairs by the water,

    Three shadows in the sun,

    Two boys growing older,

And a dad who knows they’re gonna run.

We came out here for fishing,

But the fish don’t really matter.

It’s the stories and the laughter

    That we’ll remember after.

Years from now, when we’re older,

We’ll wish we could go back

To those three chairs by the water

And that old truck on the path.

One of us got tangled up,

    The other one started laughing.

Dad just shook his head and said,

    “That’s why we brought another.”

We watched the bobbers dancing As the afternoon rolled by,

And Dad told us about his childhood

While the sun fell from the sky.

Someday those boys will leave home,

    Chase their own dreams somewhere.

Dad will probably sit alone sometimes In that old fishing chair.

But he’ll hear two little voices Every time the evening falls,

And remember how they used to race When he called them in

    at dark.

    Three chairs by the water,

    Three lives beneath the stars,

Two sons learning from their father How to appreciate how lucky they

are. We came out here for fishing,

But we caught something better— A handful of quiet memories We’ll carry

    forever. And years from now,

when we’re older, If we’re lucky,

    we’ll come back

To those three chairs by the water

And that old truck on the path.

    Three chairs by the water,

A campfire burning low… We thought we were just fishing.

Dad knew we were making memories

    We’d carry when we go.
