(hahaha) Three taps on the pine,
but the blueprint says it's solid.
No pipes, no vents,
just a dead-space pocket.
Let's map the dust.
Let's see who's listening.
Took a hammer to the drywall,
measuring the frame, chalk lines on the hardwood,
playing with a name.
They call it paranoid,
I call it real estate,
there's twelve square feet they forgot to calculate.
(shhh) I left a glass against the plaster,
heard a breathing sound,
very soft, very slow,
moving underground. Is it damp?
Is it cold? Is it looking for a crack?
Every time I strike a nail,
something strikes it right back.
Knock twice if you're lonely,
knock three times to play,
I've been peeling back the wallpaper to clear the way.
(hehehe) Just a little gap,
just a silver thread of light,
we are sharing the same house,
we are sharing the same night.
Now my fingernails are chipped,
but the plaster's getting thin,
I can smell the static electricity beneath the skin.
It's funny how the landlord swore the partition was raw,
but I found a copper hinge and a rusted hacksaw.
(oops) And the mirror in the hall doesn't line up with the
sink, gives me plenty of amusement while I stand here and think.
If I slide the panel open,
will she look like me?
Same teeth, same scar,
same misery?
Wait.
The latch is on the outside.
Why's it on my side?
I was trying to let her out,
or was I trying to hide?
(ahhhh) No, the dead-space is empty,
the closet door is wide,
and I'm sitting in the dark,
but I'm looking from the inside.
I hold the hammer now.
I do the tapping. (hahahaha)
We're almost done remodeling.
