Thousands of voices fill the night Calling through the artificial light They

make vibrations through the air One answers here Another there They open

their mouths And sounds escape Different patterns Different shapes I watched them

speak I watched them stare As if their sounds Were floating there

What are you saying?

One sound can mean A thousand things A cry can hurt A

laugh can sing They make their noise They change their tone They

speak together… Never alone…

THEY SPEAK IN NOISE!

(long sustained SHAA’RIN fading behind the lead)

They speak They scream They laugh They cry They make their sounds

And wonder why SHAAAAAAA’RIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNN…

(higher distant layer) They speak

in noise… They speak in noise… And somehow…

They understand.

what they do I shaped my voice the way they move I

their meaning Without a sound Two creatures stare Then one looks away

I still cannot understand…

What they don’t say.

Their mouths can lie Their eyes can tell Their voices build Their

voices break They whisper secrets Through the dark… Then scream their hearts

I tried one word… They gave me three… I made one sound…

They answered me…
