The Monster They Didn’t See

She looked up at the tower… And she didn’t run.

For the first time…

Someone saw me. She danced beneath the bells While the whole world

passed her by

And when she looked up at me She didn’t turn her eyes

She smiled like I was human

Like there was nothing wrong And for a moment in my life

I felt like I belonged I didn’t know her name But I

remembered how she looked Like maybe all the years alone Had finally

been misunderstood She reached her hand toward mine

And I was terrified to move

Because nobody had ever touched me

Like there was nothing left to prove

THEY SAW A MONSTER!

BUT SHE SAW ME!

THEY SAW A FACE

THEY COULD NEVER LOVE!

THEY CALLED ME UGLY!

THEY CALLED ME BROKEN!

BUT SHE LOOKED INTO MY EYES AND DIDN’T LOOK AWAY!

THEY SAW A MONSTER!

BUT SHE SAW ME!

FOR ONE BEAUTIFUL MOMENT I WASN’T ALONE!

She taught me how to laugh

She taught me not to hide

She’d sit beside the bells And listen while I talked all night

I told her about the city I told her about the sky

I told her I had wondered What it felt like to be

alive

She never said I was a monster

She never asked me to change

She only held my hand

And somehow made me feel safe But outside these walls

The whispers started growing

They saw us together

And they already knew the story

Then the crowd came… And the laughter came… And I heard them

calling my name. Not my real name… The name they gave me. (Monster.)

They pointed at me

Like I was something they could hate They didn’t see the hands

that trembled They didn’t see the heart beneath my face

They only saw what frightened them… And suddenly I understood… They never

wanted to know me.

YOU NEVER ASKED WHO I WAS!

YOU NEVER ASKED WHAT I FELT!

YOU SAW MY FACE AND DECIDED I WAS LESS!

YOU CALLED ME A MONSTER BEFORE I EVER SPOKE!

But she still saw me.

So if the whole world hates me…

Let it.

If they want a monster…

Let them have one.

But don’t you leave me… Please… Don’t leave me.

I heard them coming… I heard them shouting her name… And for

the first time… I was afraid of what I might become.
