THE BOY IN THE BELLS

I learned the sound of silence Before I learned my name

I watched the world through windows But the world looked away

The bells were always with me When nobody else was near

They never called me ugly They never laughed at what they heard

I grew up above the city

Where the rooftops touched the sky I could see a thousand people

But I never knew their lives

They’d point up at the tower

When they saw me standing there

Some would laugh and some would whisper Some would only stop and

stare So I learned to hide my face Behind the shadows and

the stone

And every night the bells would ring To remind me I was

not alone

Maybe somewhere down below

There’s a place where I belong Maybe someone someday Will look at

me and see I’m more

SO WHY DOES EVERYONE LOOK AWAY?

Sometimes I talk to strangers When they’re walking through the square

I climb the endless staircase And disappear among the stone Maybe I’m

I’ve never held another hand

Without feeling it pull away… I’ve never heard somebody say… ‘You don’t

have to hide today.’

So I’ll stay here… Above the city… Where the bells know my

name…

Where the stone doesn’t judge me… Where nobody can see my face…
