At twenty I had this guy completely designed Big house by thirty,
nice watch, never behind Always knew the answer,
never checked the price Walked in every room like they were waiting
for advice He had the car,
the suit, the perfectly planned week Never said “I don't know,” never
looked confused or weak Spent years wondering where the hell that guy
had been Then I imagined sitting down and having a drink with
him
He talked about money
He talked about himself Checked his watch twice
While I talked about something else
The guy I thought I'd be (THERE HE
IS) Turns out I don't really like him
The guy I thought I'd be (LOOK AT HIM)
Got everything right, made everything boring
All those years thinking I missed my chance
Now I'm face to face with my imaginary man
And damn— I wouldn't even wanna be his friend
He never wastes a Saturday,
never stays out late
Never buys something stupid just because it looks great
Probably owns matching luggage,
probably folds his jeans Probably starts every morning with a seventeen-step routine
He asks my five-year plan,
I order another round Says,
“You should be further.” I say,
“According to who now?” Funny how the man I measured everything against
Gets less impressive when he has to make conversation He got there
on schedule
Never missed a beat
I got there differently And I've got better stories
The guy I thought I'd be
(THERE HE IS) Turns out I don't really like him
The guy I thought I'd be (LOOK AT HIM)
Perfect little life, but I wouldn't wanna live it
All those years thinking I fell behind
I was racing somebody invented in my mind
And damn— That guy never even existed
Here's to changing my mind Here's to plans going sideways Here's to
trying weird things Just to see what happens Here's to not knowing
Friday On a Wednesday afternoon
He'd absolutely hate this I think I like that
I'm not the guy I thought I'd be (THANK GOD) I'm somebody
he never would've predicted I'm not the guy I thought I'd be
(THANK GOD) Turns out that's a lot more interesting Let him keep
his schedule Let him keep his plan I'm done trying to impress
an imaginary man
I'm not the guy I thought I'd be (THANK GOD) And I'm
pretty damn curious who I'll be instead
