Escaped out of your cage and was taken by a fox.
I will never forget the day you lost.
The wild mustard bloomed in the east paddock wide Where the wire
fence sags and the field mice all hide
He’d leap through the clover,
so nimble and grey His fur was the colour
of clouds before rain
A beautiful coat
with a dark, smoky grain
Stormy just danced while the thistles were deep.
Oh, Stormy, the wind in the paddock is still
The mist has rolled down from the top of the hill
The red tail is flashing,
the hunter has won
And the fastest young rabbit
has run his last run.
The afternoon faded to amber and gold
The cattle grew quiet as stories untold He strayed from the briar,
too far from the post Where the tall winter grass hid a
rust-coloured ghost. A rustle of bracken,
a flash by the gate A split-second warning that came just too
late
The red fox came sweeping like wind through the grain
And Stormy was caught in the open terrain.
Oh, Stormy, the wind in the paddock is still
The mist has rolled down from the top of the hill
The red tail is flashing,
the hunter has won
And the fastest young rabbit
has run his last run.
No cry in the twilight,
no sound by the rail
Just a stir in the weeds where the fence line grows pale
The fox took him swiftly,
a prize for the night
And vanished like smoke in the fading twilight.
The burrows are silent beneath the old tree For the wildest young
kit
that the paddock would see. (ahhhh)
Now the moon rises high o'er the barbed wire line
And shines on the grass where the dew starts to shine
We’ll remember the rabbit who raced with the rain
Stormy, the grey one,
who won’t come again.
Sleep soft in the shadows...
Out past the hill.
