What is happiness, a feeling or a dream?
A quiet little river
or a wild and restless stream?
Is it found in what we gather,
in the treasures that we keep,
Or in the peace that finds us when the whole world falls
asleep?
We spend our lives pursuing What tomorrow says we'll find,
While the moments that could heal us Are the ones we leave
behind.
Maybe happiness was never At the ending of the road,
Maybe it was walking with us,
Helping carry every load.
We search the earth for answers,
We look beyond the skies,
But sometimes what we're looking for Is right before our eyes.
What if happiness is simple?
What if we've made it hard?
A grateful heart, a hand to hold,
A light inside the dark.
What if there's no formula,
No secret we must know?
Maybe happiness is learning When to hold and when to let go.
(ooh, yeah)
Maybe mountains don't define us,
Maybe money never could,
Maybe happiness is finding Something beautiful in good.
And when life gives us nothing Like the dreams we pictured then,
Happiness is finding strength To rise and live again.
Some will search for happiness In houses built of gold,
Some will chase the hands of time Afraid of growing old.
Some will climb the highest mountain
Just to prove that they belong,
Then discover at the summit
They were searching all along.
For the laughter of their children,
For their mother's loving face,
For the person waiting for them At the end of every day.
Funny how we cross the oceans Searching far for something true,
Then discover life's great treasure Was already there with you.
What if happiness is simple?
What if we've made it hard?
A grateful heart, a hand to hold,
A light inside the dark.
What if there's no formula,
No secret we must know?
Maybe happiness is learning When to hold and when to let go.
Happiness isn't never crying.
It isn't living without pain.
It isn't waiting for a lifetime Where we never see the rain.
It's standing in the storm
And still believing in the sun.
It's forgiving yesterday For everything that's done.
It's knowing we are passing Through this world for just a while,
So if you find somebody hurting,
Give them reason for a smile.
Maybe happiness is simple,
But simple doesn't mean small.
It's loving while we're living And getting up each time we fall.
There may never be a formula,
No equation we can prove,
But perhaps the closest answer
Has always been to love.
So don't wait until tomorrow
For your happiness to start.
Life isn't somewhere in the distance,
Life is beating in your heart.
What is happiness? Maybe we'll never fully know.
But perhaps we don't have to master it...
Perhaps we only have to recognize
it before it goes. (mmm...)
