I knew her name before I knew her.
From comments buried in the thread.
She caught the things nobody noticed.
I started noticing her instead.
Some weeks I shipped.
Some weeks she did.
Some weeks we both found something small
that probably didn't need a comment but somehow got one after all.
I could build a system.
I could find the flaw.
I could fix a thousand broken things.
But I could never find the words
when it mattered at all.
So I waited for Thursday.
I learned the shape of her reply.
I learned how long eleven minutes
could feel on the other side.
I waited for Thursday.
For four letters on a screen.
I never knew if she was saying
what I wanted them to mean.
But Thursday came. And there she was.
And that was
enough for me.
I started saving changes for it.
I told myself it wasn't why.
She'd leave a question in my comments.
I'd find another one in hers.
Nothing urgent. Nothing broken.
Nothing either couldn't
solve.
Just one more reason to keep talking
without saying why at all.
And I waited for Thursday.
I learned the rhythm of her name.
I learned exactly how to answer
without ever
giving myself away.
I waited for Thursday.
For four letters on a screen.
I never knew if she was saying
what I wanted them to mean.
But Thursday came. And there she was.
And that was enough
for me.
There's something I never told her.
I gave my words to Claude too.
Not because I didn't mean them.
Because I did.
Too much.
So I made them cleaner.
Made them smaller.
Made them safe enough to send.
And maybe she was doing the same thing.
Maybe that was us from the beginning.
Two people handing machines
everything we couldn't say
and waiting to see what came back.
But Claude never chose Thursday.
Claude never saved a pull request until he knew she'd probably be
there.
Claude never left a question
that didn't need an answer.
Claude never watched the timestamp.
Never noticed when she was late.
Never wondered if this was the week she finally wouldn't come back.
Claude never waited for her.
I did. And I think she waited too.
Then one Thursday something changed.
Her comment wasn't beautiful.
One sentence stopped too early.
One question landed wrong.
Three lines. One typo.
No polish. And I knew.
Because for the first time I could hear her in it.
Not the version that always knew
exactly what to say.
Her.
So I answered on Thursday.
No window open.
No second voice. No machine to make the choice.
I answered on Thursday
with half a thought and spelling wrong.
And if she heard me in the mess of it,
then maybe I'd been there all along. Ohhh
Ohhh Ohhh-oh-oh
Maybe none of it was perfect.
Maybe it didn't have to be.
The perfect words were borrowed.
But Thursday.
Thursday was us.
Approved with comments.
One comment.
No Claude.
No copy.
No paste.
Just her.
Looks good to me.
