Listen up, nursing students,
let's break it
down, DVT and vascular diseases in
this town. From the calf pain to the fingers turning blue,
Here is the NCLEX guide for you!
Pathophysiology of a DVT,
A clot forms deep where you cannot see.
Look for the signs,
remember the COWS, To save a life,
let's learn it now!
C is for Calf pain and cramping tight,
O for One-sided swelling in the night.
W is for Warm and Red where blood pools deep,
S is for SOB,
no time to sleep!
(Yeah, SOB and chest pain means PE!) When a clot is active,
don't let them stride,
D for Don't Walk,
keep them inside! V for Venous return,
eleVate it high, (Keep it up,
keep it high!) Diagnostics show D-Dimer is climbing,
Doppler ultrasound for perfect timing!
Now after the clot has finally resolved,
We use CHANT to keep them involved.
C is Calf exercises,
keep blood flowing free,
H is Hydration, as clear as can be.
A is Ambulation, get up and move,
N is No long sitting,
break the groove!
T is Ted hose and SCDs tight,
Only when the doctor says it's alright!
Let's talk treatments, watch the labs in play,
Heparin first, PTT is the way!
Antidote is Protamine, keep it close by,
Warfarin next, INR must stay high!
Target two to three,
keep the blood thin,
Vitamin K stops the bleed from within!
(Keep those levels safe!) Shift your focus to the hands and the
toes,
Where the vasospasm suddenly goes.
R is for Raynaud's,
think Ring finger bright,
Red, white, and blue in the cold of the night!
B is for Buerger's,
where heavy smoke blows,
Black fingers, black toes,
where the ischemia grows!
Stop the tobacco to save the blood flow,
That is the rule that you must know!
Now you are ready for the Med Surg exam,
Remember COWS and CHANT,
yes you can!
Raynaud's is cold, Buerger's is smoke,
Pass this test, it's no joke!
(You got this!)
