(boom-bap boom-bap)
(ahhhh-ooh-yeah) The words of Agur,
telling his plight, Says,
"I’m weary, O God,
without sight. Surely more brutish than any man,
No wisdom or knowledge inside this plan." Who has gone to heaven
and come back down?
Gathered the winds or wrapped the seas in a gown?
Who has established all earth’s expanse?
What’s His Name, or the Son’s by chance?
Every word of God is furnace-pure
(furnace-pure) A shield to those who in Him ensure
Add thou not to His perfect decree (no,
don't you add) Lest He reprove,
and you a liar be
Two things I’ve asked,
deny me not, Keep falsehood and lies from my lot.
Give neither poverty nor riches glean,
Feed me with bread,
lest pride lean. Lest I be full,
deny and scoff, Or poor and steal,
and His name slop.
Don't slander a servant to his lord,
Lest they curse, and you’re floored.
Generations that curse their parent away,
Never bless mother, hearts lead astray.
Pure in their eyes,
yet not clean white,
Lofty in eyelids, noses held tight.
A generation with teeth like swords,
Whose fangs devour the poor’s rewards.
The leech, having two daughters,
cry, "Give," as they never satisfy.
Three things, no, four,
never feigning, Never satisfy,
like fire flaring:
The barren womb, land thirsty dire,
Or the grave whose hunger's entire.
The eye that mocks the elder's head,
Will by ravens of the valley be fed.
Three things are a marvellous brew,
Four that I cannot construe:
The way of the eagle high in the sky,
A serpent's glide on rocks,
fly, The ship on sea’s foam embrace,
The way of a man with a maiden’s grace.
(hummmmm-m-mm) Such is the way,
adulterer's trail, Eating, wiping her mouth,
saying "I’ve done no fail." Three things that shake the earth's might,
Four which under it cannot right:
A servant rules as kingly leaven,
Fool’s stomach full, the order’s shaken.
Odious woman wedded blossom,
Handmaid joins mistress, no bottom.
Four small things of wisdom so:
Ants prepare for winter’s woe;
Conies, lowly folk of troves,
Yet fashion rocks for their abodes.
The locusts have no kingly lord,
Yet march onward in a horde.
The spider lays her hands in wait,
Yet in palaces, her webs relate.
Three things advance in steady stride,
Four in magnificence abide:
The lion fierce, without retreat,
He-Goat striding in the street; And a king with ranks one eye.
If thou hast done foolishly in pride,
Lay your hand on your mouth,
abide. For churning of milk forms cream divine,
Wrath from a fool causes strife,
never benign.
Lord Jesus,
You, the embodiment of wisdom,
humble and true.
Open our eyes to see Your truth and glory,
to recognize the wonders of Your creation.
May we find satisfaction in You alone,
avoiding the snares of pride.
Jesus, our Saviour and the Word made flesh,
shield us with Your grace. (Amen)
