I left that bar without a warning,
Left my glass there halfway gone,
Climbed aboard that bus at midnight,
By daylight we were moving on.
Watched the Texas lights behind me
Disappear beneath the wheels,
Sometimes leaving's all that's left When staying hurts too real.
Then my phone lit up beside me,
And his name was on the screen,
But there's only so long a woman Can wonder what she means.
So I turned that ringer down,
Let the highway carry me...
All the way to Tennessee,
That phone kept lighting up for me,
Every hundred miles or so,
Another thing he needed me to know.
"Baby, God, I was blind,
I made you doubt you were ever mine,
I had the one thing I can't live without And somehow made
her leave. You don't have to pick up,
darling,
But if you're hearing me—
I'm coming for the woman that I love
All the way to Tennessee." First he said,
"I'm leaving Texas, And I'm headed east on forty.
I know you don't wanna hear my voice,
But, baby, God, I'm sorry." Then another came near Memphis,
And I heard it in his voice,
"I thought you'd always be there,
Like loving me left you no choice.
You never asked for everything,
You just asked to know I cared,
And every time you reached for me,
I acted like you weren't there.
I made the woman that I can't live without Feel like nobody
cared." I listened to that one twice...
But I still didn't call him back.
Quarter after two that morning,
I heard tires hit the drive,
Saw headlights sweep across my room...
And something in me came alive.
I hadn't answered one damn call.
Hadn't told him where I'd be.
But somehow he'd found that little house Up in the hills of
Tennessee.
Then came one knock.
(knock) Then another. (knock)
Then one more. (knock) He walked across the porch; Put his hand
around the handle... And opened up the door.
He took one step toward me,
I took the other three,
He wrapped his arms around me
Like he'd crossed the world for me.
"God, I need you,
baby,
More than I knew how to say.
I loved you every minute,
I just never loved you the right way.
I made you feel unwanted,
Like you could leave and I'd be fine,
But losing you showed me the truth I'd been too damn blind
to find. I don't care where this road takes us,
Long as you're right here with me." And underneath those Smoky Mountain
stars, He held on tight to me.
I left that bar without a warning,
Thinking he might never see...
Sometimes you don't know what you've got Till it's halfway...
To Tennessee.
