(click...click...click...click...) I loved that car.
Apparently, I had a weird way of showing it. (Apparently.)
Fast-food bags on the passenger floor,
Check-engine light I professionally ignored.
Gas gauge low since sometime in May,
Radio louder made the noise go away.
Drove that thing to a job I couldn't stand,
Left every morning with coffee in my hand.
Said, 'One day I'm getting something brand new.' Car said— (Maybe start
by changing my oil.) Fair.
THE CAR I ALMOST KILLED!
Somehow kept moving when nothing else would!
Every bad date, every Friday night,
Every wrong damn turn with the music too high!
Wasn't worth much, but looking back still— HALF MY LIFE WAS IN
THE CAR I ALMOST KILLED!
(Almost?) Don't ruin the chorus.
Had arguments parked underneath streetlights,
Made up, broke up,
drove home at midnight.
Friends packed in saying,
'Turn that shit up!' Three dollars gas and questionable luck.
Got stranded once—okay, maybe four,
Kicked the tire like that would help anymore.
Every dashboard light eventually came on,
Looked like Christmas—I just kept driving along. (Oil.)
I know. (Brakes.) I know.
(Tires.) I KNOW.
(swish...swish...swish...) Funny thing is,
I don't remember the horsepower.
Don't remember what I paid.
But I remember who sat beside me.
And who stopped.
I thought it was just an old car
I couldn't afford to replace.
Didn't know I was driving around with an entire chapter of my
life stuck in the seats.
(Still ignoring that light?) Yeah.
(Idiot.) Miss you too.
THE CAR I ALMOST KILLED!
Took me everywhere before
I knew where I was going!
Jobs I hated, people I loved,
Empty tank somehow still enough!
Wouldn't want it back—but I swear I still MISS WHO I WAS
IN THE CAR I ALMOST KILLED!
(CHECK ENGINE!) Later! (LOW FUEL!) Later!
(SERVICE REQUIRED!)
Okay, everybody relax!
...Come on. THAT'S MY GIRL.
(Get an oil change.)
