Alarm went off.
Coffee went on.
Same pair of boots by the same front door.
Nobody watching.
Nobody cared.
Funny— I still got up.
Sun barely up, already backing out,
Coffee in the cup and a head full of doubt.
Same road, same lights,
same radio low, Had somewhere to be and somewhere else I wanted
to go.
Worked all day with tomorrow in my head,
Little ideas getting louder instead.
Nobody asking what I planned to become—
Clock said eight.
Day already begun.
BEFORE ANYBODY KNEW MY NAME,
I WAS ALREADY LIVING EVERY DAMN DAY!
Windows down on the drive back home,
Whole lotta nowhere still somewhere to go.
No crowd, no lights,
nobody saying my name— I WAS ALREADY ALIVE BEFORE ANYBODY CAME!
(We were there!) Yeah.
So was I.
Clock out tired, hands beat up,
Gas light glowing, still pushing my luck.
Get home thinking maybe tonight I'll rest— Ten minutes later got another
idea instead. Laptop open,
dinner getting cold, Trying weird shit nobody asked me to show.
Some worked once, most disappeared,
Still hit save like somebody might hear.
No audience waiting, no reason it seemed,
Just me after work building ridiculous dreams.
Looking back now, that's the part that's strange—
Nothing was happening. Everything was changing.
(Anybody watching?)
No.
(Anybody listening?) Probably not.
(You gonna keep going?) Obviously.
I used to think those days were the hallway before the room.
Like someday a door would open and my real life would begin.
But I remember those drives.
Those mornings. Those stupid ideas.
That wasn't before my life.
That was it.
BEFORE ANYBODY KNEW MY NAME,
I WAS ALREADY LIVING EVERY DAMN DAY!
Morning to midnight, tired but awake,
Making something just to see what I could make.
If tomorrow gets bigger,
that's cool either way— IT CAN'T MAKE YESTERDAY MORE REAL THAN TODAY!
(Who was there?) I was.
(Who believed?) Some days?
Me. (Who kept going?) Same damn guy.
Before anybody knew? I knew.
