(sound of rustling old magazines) (cell phone key clicks)
"Hey... I'm just sitting here in this lobby.
Staring at these old magazines,
waiting." Out on the blacktop under the heat wave Kid selling ice-cold
water, trying to behave Heavy plastic bottles in a cardboard box Dodging
the bumpers, watching the clocks (yeah) He unlocks the screen,
types a line Almost hits send but he runs out of time
Drafts in the folder that never leave the phone Standing in the
crowd but you're working all alone
Yeah, you're working all alone
We are waiting on a sign on the boulevard Trying to make
a dollar when the times are hard (so hard) Keep the message
close, never let it send Staring at the ceiling till the night-shift
ends
Old pages turning, stories of some other lives While the engine idles
and the sun survives He holds the bottle up,
wipes the sweat away Same three words he wanted to say (almost
had it) But the light turns green,
the engines roar Back to the pavement,
back to the floor
Staring at these old magazines...
(almost hits send) (cell phone lock sound)
