I started out counting and I gave that up early,
The ground here is white and the sky isn't deep,
There's a sign leaning over
with nothing left on it,
And heat coming up
in a shivering sheet.
Mm,
mmm, mm-mm, Mm, mmm,
mm-mm-mm.
There's cracked flat salt
and there's nothing to learn from it,
Dust devils turning like they're due somewhere soon,
There's a bird holding still
on a long slow railing,
And the only shade out here for miles is me.
The salt flat has no edge that I can see,
It just keeps going and it takes the sky with it,
The salt flat has no edge and neither do I,
So I keep walking and I don't ask why.
I stopped saying the name
somewhere behind me, It had worn down soft and it sounded the
same
As the wind coming over,
as the salt going paler,
As a thing you'd repeat till it isn't a name.
The salt flat has no edge that I can see,
It just keeps going and it takes the sky with it,
The salt flat has no edge and neither do I,
So I keep walking
and I don't ask why.
Now the ground's started shining and the crust here is broken,
Somebody rested and the salt's pressed and worn,
There's a shape in the white about the size of a person,
And I sat down in it
and I felt less alone.
Mm,
mmm,
mm-mm,
Mm, mmm, mm-mm-mm.
