“Mama, can you take me there?”
“Mama, can you tie my shoe?”
“Mama, can you buy me this?”
“Mama, I just want you.”
“Mama, where are we going?”
“Mama, don't turn out the light.”
“Mama, will you stay beside me Till I fall asleep tonight?”
A hundred little questions,
And “Mama” filled the air,
For every laugh and every tear,
You always found me there.
Once I was your whole little world,
And you were all of mine,
Tiny hands reaching out for me A thousand different times.
Now you're finding your own world,
And that's how it should be,
But sometimes I miss that little voice Calling out for me.
Wherever tomorrow takes you,
There's one thing I hope you'll do,
Call me sometimes just to say,
“Mama... are you there?”
I'll always answer you.
I remember your first school morning,
Your little uniform and bag,
How tightly you held onto me Before you left my hand.
Birthdays and the presents,
The things you'd dreamed about,
Sleepless nights beside your bed Until the fever settled down.
Every year your shoes grew bigger,
Every year your dreams did too,
Somewhere in those ordinary days,
My little child just grew.
One day you'll leave for studies,
One day you'll find your way,
Another town, another home,
A life that's yours someday.
I'll smile and watch you spreading wings,
Though tears may come to me,
I never raised you just to stay...
I raised you to be free.
Once I was your whole little world,
Now the whole world's calling you,
There are roads you'll have to travel,
There are dreams you must pursue.
Go and build the life you're dreaming,
Go wherever you need to be,
You never have to stay beside me
To keep your place with me.
And when the years get busy,
And home feels far away,
You don't
need a special reason,
You don't need much to say.
Just call me from wherever you are,
“Mama... are you there?”
And I'll say, “I'm here,
my love.
I'm always here.” You
once needed Mama for everything.
Someday you may only need me
For a little call.
That's alright. Just call...
Mama will be here.
