(hummmmm) There's a lantern in the fog tonight,
Swinging where there ain't no road.
Mama said don't follow lights That dance where no man goes.
The marsh grass bends without the wind,
The water hums a tune,
And every step I take toward it
Feels like walking toward my doom.
Oh,
don't chase the lantern light,
Don't trust the glow at midnight.
It'll lead you from the path you know,
To the place where lost souls go.
Turn around, don't call its name,
The fog won't ever be the same.
Once it catches hold of you,
The marsh will keep you too.
Old Tom vanished twenty years ago,
Following a golden gleam.
His boots were found beside the reeds,
Like something swallowed him between.
Now when the moon hangs thin and pale,
Folks swear they hear him cry,
Calling from the misty dark,
Beneath the weeping sky.
I saw it waiting through the haze,
A flicker cold and white.
And standing there beside the flame Was something not quite right.
Too tall, too thin,
too still to breathe,
Its smile stretched ear to ear.
It raised a hand and beckoned me,
And suddenly it was near.
I ran until my lungs gave out,
Branches clawed my skin.
The fog kept whispering my name,
Trying to pull me in.
The lantern faded with the dawn,
The marsh fell still once more.
But every night I lock my door And hear it at the
shore.
Oh, don't chase the lantern light,
Don't trust the glow at midnight.
It'll lead you from the path you know,
To the place where lost souls go.
Turn around, don't call its name,
The fog won't ever be the same.
And if you see that lantern sway,
Pray the dawn comes soon that day.
There's a lantern in the fog
tonight... And I swear it's getting closer. (shhh)
