Last Lesson by the Sea

The tower's high, the water's blue,

the waves are rolling in

I've watched the swimmers for the years,

a happy, faithful win

The final day is here now,

a boy is by my side

I'll teach him how to swim today,

a happy, joyful ride.

I'm the lifeguard's last lesson,

I take him to the sea

The water's warm, the sun is bright,

a happy place to be

He learns to float,

he learns to kick,

he learns to trust the tide

And I will be the lifeguard,

with happiness inside.

I've saved the swimmers in the surf,

I've pulled them from the deep

I've watched the children learn to swim,

a happy, joyful leap

The ocean has been my home,

for forty happy years

And I've been teaching joy to all,

a happy, simple creed.

The boy is swimming on his own,

his smile is wide and bright

He shouts "Thank you,

mister, this is the best day of my life"

I wave goodbye, the tower's empty,

my work is finally done

But I've passed on the joy of swimming,

a happy, hopeful one.
