I took the long way home again,
Down the road beside the creek.
The sky was hanging heavy gray,
The kind that makes the old trees speak.
The clouds broke open overhead,
And soaked me to the bone.
But somehow in that pouring rain,
I didn't feel alone.
People ask what's wrong with me,
I never know what words to say.
But the rain has never needed An explanation anyway.
The rain knows my name,
Knows every crack and scar.
It doesn't ask me why I hurt Or who I really are.
It just falls around my shoulders,
Soft as an old refrain.
When nobody understands me,
The rain knows my name.
The river carried fallen leaves Like little boats of gold.
And every drop upon the water
Looked like stories being told.
The robins hid beneath the pines,
The wind hummed low and deep.
And for the first time in a while,
My heart unclenched its teeth.
The oak tree doesn't judge me.
The creek don't keep a score.
The mountains don't ask who I was Or who I was before.
The sparrows don't need answers.
The moss don't care at all.
Nature simply lets me be,
And somehow that's enough.
Maybe that's why I keep walking When my chest gets heavy.
Maybe that's why I keep coming back.
Because the earth has a way
Of holding what humans drop.
And the rain... The rain always makes room.
The rain knows my name,
And sings it through the leaves.
A melody of silver drops Carried on the breeze.
And though tomorrow may still hurt,
Tonight I'll stay this way.
Walking through the storm alone,
But not lonely in the rain.
The rain knows my name,
And for a little while,
That's enough.
The clouds keep moving.
The river keeps flowing.
And somewhere beneath the storm,
I keep growing too.
