July heat hanging heavy
on this quiet suburban street
Stack of heavy delivery boxes at my feet
Sweat on my collar,
sun beating down so bright
But in their front window,
there's a glowing winter light (ahhhh) An elderly couple waving from the
porch swing chair
And there’s a Christmas tree in July
Shining green and gold beneath a summer sky Warm porch lights and
tinsel through the glass
While the humid summer evening starts to pass
(yeah, keeping the light alive)
One evening I finally asked,
and they let me step inside
To a living room of memories they never try to hide
A firefighter photograph
in a polished wooden frame
Beside a small brass bell that carries his name
No other family left on this dusty ground Just two empty chairs
when the winter comes around She looked at his picture with a
gentle, heavy tear And said,
"Christmas was the time he held so dear
He was rescuing a family from the smoke and the flame
So we promised that we'd always keep his spark the same It's
not about the sorrow,
it's the kindness that he gave Every bulb is a promise
that we made to be brave" (we
made to be brave) Then the winter snow fell heavy,
and the husband passed away
I walked up to the dark house on a cold December day
She was sitting by the window,
ready to turn it all off
But I brought a brand new pine tree,
brushing off my coat We hung the old ornaments,
and we lit the faded star
Now there's a Christmas tree in July
Shining green and gold beneath a summer sky
Warm porch lights and tinsel through the glass
While the humid summer evening starts to pass
(we keep it shining high)
Years have rolled on,
and my own little child
asks me why
We keep our Christmas tree burning in July
I smile at the window,
and I think of that street (hmmmmm)
