The backyard fence, the old oak tree
Pretend swords and make-believe
We drew the circle in the dirt
Said the words from grandma's book
Laughed when nothing happened first
Then the air began to shake
The shadows stretched a little long Our giggles turned to held breath
Something moved behind the shed
It wasn't pretend anymore
The game woke something old
Eyes in the leaves,
a voice like thunder Calling our names from the fold (huh)
We ran but the ground pulled slow Trees whispered secrets we never
knew
Our toy crowns fell in the mud The sky cracked open blue
What have we called into the light
No more games, no more pretend
The real one stands at the fence line
It wasn't pretend anymore
The game woke something
old
Eyes in the leaves,
a voice like thunder Calling our names from the fold (oh)
We stood there small beneath the sky
The thing just watched and then it smiled
Backyard quiet once again
