Yeah… They told me who I was
before I knew my name.
Tried to put me in a box,
tried to make me play the game.
But I looked inside the mirror like,
“Who am
I?” And the answer wasn’t written in nobody else’s eyes.
I am more than what they see,
More than what they say I’ll be,
Through the scars and through the rain,
I found myself again.
I don’t need you to define me,
There’s a fire living inside me,
If I lose the world tonight,
I still know who I am inside.
I grew up with a question sitting heavy on my chest,
“Who you really are
when nobody impressed?”
When the lights go down and the crowd disappear,
When your biggest dreams
are fighting all your fears.
I wore different faces
just to fit different rooms,
Changed my voice for acceptance,
changed my walk for approval.
But every mask got heavy,
every lie got loud,
Till I finally realized
I was hiding from myself.
I am more than what they see,
More than what they say I’ll be,
Through the scars and through the rain,
I found myself again.
I don’t need you to define me,
There’s a fire living inside me,
If I lose the world tonight,
I still know who I am inside.
Identity ain’t a name
on a government card,
It’s the choices that you make
when the pressure gets hard.
It’s the morals you keep
when nobody can see,
It’s the person in the mirror
when you’re finally free.
I got dreams bigger than the place I came from,
But I still carry every lesson from the place that I’m from.
Roots run deep, even branches get shaken,
You can bend in the storm without ever breaking.
When the world gets loud,
And I can’t hear my heart,
I close my eyes,
And go back to the start.
No more hiding,
No more running, I know who I am…
And I know where I’m coming from.
So here’s to everybody
who’s been misunderstood, Who had to find themselves
when nobody else could.
To the ones called “different,” “too much,” “not enough,” You don’t need
their permission
just to know you’re enough.
I am more than what they see,
More than what they say I’ll be,
Through the scars and through the rain,
I found myself again.
I don’t need you to define me,
There’s a fire living inside me,
Even if the whole world changes,
I won’t forget my name.
I am here…
I am whole… I am more than what they told me… This
is me.
Yeah.
Not who they wanted.
Not who they expected.
Not who my mistakes said I was.
I’m who I decided to become.
That’s identity.
