    Creeping Interstate

    Kyrin Tyler

    Ayy…

It was supposed to be a regular night.

    That’s what they thought. (yeah…)

Late night, creeping through the city,

    lights low, Phone ringing back-to-back,

    I already know. Bro said,

    “Where you at?” I said,

“I’m on the road,” He said,

“Pull up real quick,” so I changed my route.

Late night, everybody got a story,

Everybody acting tough until the situation get serious.

    I don’t say too much,

    I just watch and observe,

’Cause the quiet ones around here usually make the biggest moves. (Yeah!) (I

already know.) (Uh.) (Look.) It was 11:45,

I was sitting in the whip,

Had the music turned down when I noticed something shift.

Saw my bro across the street,

    he was waving me in,

    Looked around one time,

then I pulled up to the curb.

    He said, “Something ain’t right,

    everybody acting strange,” I said,

“Tell me what you heard,” he said,

“Nothing but a name.” Now the whole mood changed,

    ain’t nobody cracking jokes,

Everybody looking serious, everybody watching roads.

    I told bro, “Stay calm,

don’t be making no scene,” He said,

“I know, but I swear somebody watching the team.” Then my phone

started buzzing, unknown number on the screen,

I answered, heard silence… Then somebody said my name.

    “Where you

    at?” (Huh?) Late night,

    creeping through the city,

    lights low, Phone ringing back-to-back,

    I already know. Bro said,

    “Where you at?” I said,

“I’m on the road,” He said,

    I don’t say too much,

    I hung up the phone,

    looked at bro like,

    “You good?”

He said, “Yeah, but something’s off,” like he knew that it would.

We got back in the car,

    started heading downtown,

Then we saw two cars sitting with nobody around.

    I said, “Keep driving,

    don’t stop,” He said,

“Why?” I said, “Just trust me.” Next thing you know,

both cars started moving behind us,

Now the whole conversation got quiet inside us.

    No panic, no screaming,

    just watching the road,

Trying to figure out exactly where they wanted us to go.

    We made the next turn,

    then another one too,

Cars disappeared… Now what do we do?

    Bro looked

at me. I looked at him.

    We

both knew the night wasn’t finished.

Everybody wanna be tough… Until the pressure gets real.

Everybody wanna talk… Until it’s time to stand on what they said.

    That’s when you find out

    who’s really with you.

    We pulled up somewhere safe,

parked around back, Turned the car off,

sat quiet, waited for the facts.

Five minutes passed, then my phone buzzed again,

    Same unknown number…

    “Thought you were my friend.”

    I looked at bro like,

    “Who could this be?”

    He said, “Don’t answer that,

    let it sit.”

I said, “Bet.” Then another message came through:

    “We know where you been.”

I ain’t respond. Put the phone face down.

    Sometimes saying nothing

    says enough.

    Late night,

    creeping through

    the city, lights low,

    Phone

    ringing back-to-back, I already know.

(Late night!) (Yeah!) (Watch and observe!) (Uh!)

Funny thing about the city… You never
