The county road was empty
My hands were tired on the wheel
Five years gone behind me
And none of it felt real
I passed the boarded station
Where we used to count the trains
Then I saw our old white mailbox
Waiting in the rain
The house was smaller somehow
But the maple still stood tall
I remembered teenage anger
Burning holes into the walls
She never asked for sorry
She just kept the curtains drawn
And every time I wandered
That lamp kept holding on
I almost kept on driving Pride still heavy in my chest
But the porch light knew my name
Better
than all the rest (ahhhh)
There was a light left on for me
Burning soft above the door
No matter how far I ran
I was never lost for sure
Mama kept a place for me
Like a prayer upon the floor
I came home a broken man
And found I was hers once more (ohhhh)
I cut the engine quietly
Like a kid who broke a rule
Through the glass I saw her picture
Beside my old high school
I knocked once, then I froze there
With my suitcase in my hand
The door swung wide before me
Like she always had it planned (mama) There was a light left
on for me
Burning soft above the door
No matter how far I ran
I was never lost for sure
Mama kept a place for me
And I do not run no more
I came home a broken man
She called me son once more (ohhhh) She left the light on
for me
So I left the road behind (hummmm)
