A friend won't lead you down a road

Where darkness waits and trouble grows,

Won't hand you something just to hide The hurt you're carrying deep

inside.

A friend will see you when you're low,

And stay beside you through the cold,

When everybody walks away,

A true friend finds a reason to stay.

When you're thirsty, they'll bring you water,

When you're hungry, they'll share their bread,

When you're hurting, they'll sit beside you,

And give you hope to rise again.

A friend will lift you higher,

Not pull you to the ground,

They'll walk with you through fire When no one else is around.

Through sickness and through good times,

Through sunshine and through rain,

And when you cannot find the words,

They'll bow their head and pray.

A true friend doesn't help you fall,

They help you find your way.

Some people come when times are good,

And disappear when trouble comes,

Some call you brother,

call you friend, But only stay until the party ends.

But blessed is the faithful soul

Who sees your wounds and doesn't go,

Who doesn't judge the tears you cry,

But helps you stand and reminds you why.

When you're cold, they'll bring you shelter,

When you're weary, they'll help you stand,

When you're lost beneath your burdens,

You'll feel the strength within their hand.

Don't show me friendship with a bottle,

Don't show me friendship with a lie,

Don't tell me, "Brother,

come and follow,"

If where we're going kills the light.

Show me friendship through compassion,

Through forgiveness, truth, and grace.

And if I ever lose direction,

Take my hand and let us pray.

Pray with me when I am broken,

Pray for me when I am strong,

Pray beside me through the darkness,

Until together we see dawn.

And when your own heart becomes weary,

I'll do the same for you,

It's giving until the end.
