  • Cross The Mississippi!

    Cross The Mississippi!

    Chase Baker

The morning mist lay on the stream,

    The current rolled so wide.

We loaded all we owned aboard,

    With oxen by our side.

    The ferryman untied the rope,

    The waters churned below.

We bowed our heads and offered prayer,

For the place we’d never know.

Cross the Mississippi, wide and deep,

    Carry us safe today.

Leave the old hills far behind,

Where we once used to stay.

Toward the setting sun we ride,

    Where the prairie grasses grow.

With hopeful hearts and steady hands,

Across the river we go. (ooh)

    The children watched

    the drifting logs,

    The eagle circled high.

The water pulled against the raft,

    Beneath the summer sky.

The eastern shore grew small and dim,

    The western bank drew near.

We thanked the Lord who brought us through,

    And calmed our every fear.

We’ll build our homes beyond these banks,

Where rich black fields are found.

    We’ll raise our crops and

tend our stock, On new and fertile ground.

Though many miles still lie ahead,

We’ll face them come what may.

    For once we crossed

the mighty stream, There was no turning away.
