{soft piano arpeggios, warm sub-bass pad,
atmospheric textures}
There are voices in the hallway,
someone laughing by the door.
I know every face around me,
I've seen them all before.
I answer when they ask me,
I smile at all the right times.
Nobody would ever notice
how far away I am inside.
I'm close enough to touch,
but somehow out of reach.
There's so much being said,
and nothing gets to me.
{drum build-up, swelling synth pads} I'm alone in a crowded room,
a hundred voices fill the air.
Everybody's standing next to me,
but somehow no one's really there.
I laugh when everybody laughs,
I say the words they wanna hear.
How can I feel
a million miles away when everyone I know is here?
My phone is full of messages,
names lighting up the screen.
I type a dozen answers,
but never what I really mean.
We talk about the weekend,
the weather and the plans.
Anything to keep from saying I could really use a hand.
I know they haven't left me,
I know they haven't gone.
But being surrounded doesn't mean you don't still feel alone.
{driving drum build} Maybe I don't need a hundred people trying to
pull me through. Maybe I just need one person
I can tell the honest truth.
So when you ask me how I'm doing,
this time I won't say “fine.” I'll say I've felt alone for
longer than I'd ever like to hide.
{crescendo drum build} I was alone in a crowded room,
with a hundred voices in the air.
Everybody standing next to me,
and I thought nobody really cared.
But tonight I let the silence break,
I finally let somebody near.
I may still feel a million miles away,
but at least you know I'm here.
The room is still crowded,
nothing really changed outside.
But one person saw beneath the smile— and stayed here by my
side.
{clean guitar and piano fade out}
