  • Dawn on the Homestead

    Dawn on the Homestead

    Back country roads

    {fingerpicked acoustic guitar

    intro} {warm pedal steel guitar swells} {gentle fiddle drone} Woke up this

mornin’, filled up the coffee pot,

Strong, bitter coffee, steam risin’ from the top.

    Sat there on the porch

    watchin’ daylight find its way,

As the sun climbed slow above the hills to start another day.

In the distance I could hear Granddaddy’s old tractor roll,

Turnin’ over fields with a steady farmer’s soul.

He’d been out there workin’ long before the sky turned gray,

Puttin’ in an honest day’s work

    out here in the USA.

    Out here in the USA,

    the work begins at dawn,

    Before the rooster crows,

    before the stars are gone.

    It’s dirt beneath your fingernails,

    sweat upon your face,

Livin’ off the good Lord’s land with a little faith and grace.

Every sunrise brings another chance to earn your pay,

That’s the life we’re proud to live out here in the USA.

    The rooster started crowin’,

    the old dogs barked awhile,

    Breakfast on the table

    with my mama’s country smile.

    Finished up my coffee,

then I headed down the hall,

    Pulled on my blue jeans,

    work shirt, boots and all.

Grabbed my old white jacket ‘cause the mornin’ still was cool,

    By noon it’d be warmer,

but right now it felt just right to do.

There’s a whole lot of ground

    waitin’ for the plow today,

    Another chapter being written

    out here in the USA.

I’ve still got a lot to learn about this farmer’s way of

    life, The long days,

the sacrifice, the joy and all the strife.

    Granddad says, “Keep showin’ up,

the land will teach you true.

Respect the earth that feeds us,

and it’ll take care of you.”

    Out here in the USA,

where the fields stretch wide and far,

The morning sun’s our time clock

and the moon’s our evening star.

From the smell of fresh-cut hay to the sound of tractor wheels,

There’s not a richer life than one a hard day’s labor builds.

We’ll keep this family tradition alive come what may,

Thankful for another sunrise out here in the USA.

    One more cup of coffee,

    one more row to plow,

Learning from the ones before me,

    starting here and now.

As long as these old fields keep calling,

I’ll answer every day… Proud to call this farm my home,

    out here in the USA.

    {fading acoustic guitar and pedal steel}
