Old porch swing and a screen door sigh
Paws on the steps
by the July sky
Cat on the fence with a king-sized stare Dog in the yard
like he owns the air
Every summer they would circle slow Noses up high in a private
show
One would hiss and the other would grin Both too proud just
to let love in
Kids on the block would place their bets Best old rivals the
town still gets
But under the moon by the garden gate They shared the quiet
and they shared the wait Something like trust in the silver air
Something like home when the night was there Cats and dogs,
hearts at war, side by side Scratches and laughter in the same
old ride Years roll on and they still come through Half a
little storm, half a promise true Cats and dogs,
dusk to dawn, near and far Chasing one another back to where
they are Winter came dressed in a salt-white coat Dog chased leaves
while the cat stayed remote Then the rain hit hard on the
alley tin Both ran under where the bikes had been Dog brought
trouble with a muddy track Cat looked mad but she led him
back They would brawl by noon then nap by three Like an
old married joke in a cherry tree Maybe love is a crooked
little game Teeth and grace with a borrowed name Maybe peace is
a bowl half shared A watchful blink that says I cared
Cats and dogs, hearts at
war, side by side Scratches and laughter in the
same old ride Years roll on and they still come through Half
a little storm, half a promise true Cats and dogs,
dusk to dawn, near
and far Chasing one another back to where they are (ooh) (ahhh)
Now the porch is old and the paint is thin
Still that dance begins where the days begin Cat by the fence
and the dog by the rose Same old story,
and everybody knows
