Funny how a dream never tells you what it costs.
Shows you where you're going.
Never what you're gonna lose.
I used to think that change was just a door you had
to find, Turn the handle,
walk on through, and leave the past behind.
Nobody mentioned all the locks you had to break,
Or how the life you built could be the first thing you
forsake.
Then something shifted, couldn't tell you when or why,
Just got tired of watching all my chances passing by.
Started building something with the hours I could steal,
Didn't know if it would work,
just knew the need was real.
THIS IS THE PRICE OF BECOMING!
All the nights nobody saw!
Every bridge I had to burn down,
Every time I learned to fall!
I gave the years,
I gave the comfort,
Gave the life I used to know!
But I won't trade the man I'm building
For the man I used to know!
Stopped explaining every plan to people passing through,
Not because I knew it all—I barely had a clue.
There's only so much doubt a fragile dream can tolerate,
Before you start confusing someone's fear with your own fate.
Some mornings I was certain I was wasting precious time,
Building castles out of pixels,
turning effort into rhyme.
But understanding doesn't pay you,
doesn't quiet every bill,
Doesn't guarantee the mountain's worth the effort of the hill.
There's a difference between progress and the promise of reward,
So I count the things I've built,
not just the things I can't afford.
Maybe I never needed to become a different man.
Maybe I just needed to stop abandoning the one I am.
All those years I thought the answer lived beyond my reach,
But some things only make sense when life becomes the teacher.
I'm not the kid who thought that life would somehow figure out,
I'm the man who kept on building while he wrestled with his
doubt.
Still got questions, still got mornings full of fear,
But the person I was waiting for is finally standing here.
THIS IS THE PRICE OF BECOMING!
Every scar and every mile!
Every dream that almost broke me,
Every tear behind the smile!
I gave the years,
I gave the comfort,
But I found what I didn't know!
If becoming costs you everything,
SOME THINGS ARE WORTH THE PRICE YOU OWE!
Oh, I paid the price of becoming!
And I'm still learning as I go!
But I won't trade the man I'm building
For the man I used to know!
I kept waiting for the world to change.
Turns out...
I was the one changing.
