I woke up before the daylight
Before the house began to stir
There was something different at the window
Something quiet in the world
I pulled back the curtain slowly
And the whole backyard had changed
Every branch was holding silver
Every rooftop wore the same
The kitchen clock was ticking
There was coffee on the stove
The Christmas cards were on the counter
And the stockings hung below
I could hear the furnace humming
Like it always does this time
And somewhere down the hallway
Someone turned over in their sleep
December morning Snow falling without a sound
December morning
Nothing moving in this town
For just a little while The whole world seems to wait
December morning Before everybody wakes
I stepped outside in slippers
Just to feel it underneath
The snow was soft and untouched
And the air was clean and sweet
I could see my breath around me
I could hear a cardinal sing
And for once I wasn’t thinking
About everything
No one needs an answer
No one needs a plan
Christmas doesn’t need explaining When you see it where you stand
Soon the doors will open Soon the coffee will disappear
Soon somebody will turn the music up And Christmas will be everywhere
But right now there’s just the snowfall
And the quiet of this place
And I’m gonna keep this moment Before the morning changes shape
December morning
Snow falling without a sound
December morning White blankets on the ground For just a little while
Everything feels new
December morning And I get to see it too
December morning Before the laughter fills the air December morning Before we
all get everywhere I’ll stand here for a moment And let the
silence stay December morning
Before Christmas starts the day
The house is waking slowly
The snow is still coming down
And somewhere in the distance
I can hear the first car now (December morning…)
